Brilliant Botanicals
There are a plethora of gins available to consume, with craft distillers popping up here, there and everywhere. If you're a fan of all things gin and have enjoyed the pleasure of sipping on a wide selection, you'll notice that the flavour can vary enormously. While the main ingredient of gin is Juniper Berries (what hops are to beer), the remainder of a particular gin’s flavour profile will be down to an array of botanicals that the distiller chooses to use to produce their unique blend.Botanicals are plant extracts that, in addition to gin, are more commonly used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. These extracts can come from herbs, roots, flowers, leaves and seeds and as you might suspect, can provide an abundance of flavour when added to food and drink. Along with juniper berries, the most common botanicals that Gin distillers tend to use are Coriander seeds, Angelica root, Angelica seed, Lemon peel, Orange peel and Orris root to name just a few. As well as gin, other botanical-based spirits include absinthe, ouzo and a range of flavoured vodkas.
Created by innovative mixologists CBD cocktails are starting to crop up on cocktail menus throughout the country. You may be wondering why you would want to mix gin and CBD. Well, we'll tell you. CBD is extracted from the hemp plant and used by many consumers to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The cannabinoid, with its herbaceous and nutty flavour, can also be considered a botanical making it a fine companion and addition to the already existing botanical ingredients found in your favourite gin.
